What Not to Pack When Moving Internationally from Dubai: A Practical Checklist

May and June are when decisions become action. School years end, tenancy agreements expire, and containers get booked. For most families, the focus is on what to pack. But what you leave behind matters just as much, and getting it wrong can mean delays at customs, confiscated goods, or shipments held at port while charges accumulate.

This is not a list of abstract rules. It is the practical guidance that experienced movers share before packing day, covering everything from genuinely dangerous items to the things that simply are not worth shipping.

Hazardous and Flammable Items

This category causes more problems than any other. Items that seem perfectly ordinary in a home become serious safety and legal issues inside a sealed shipping container.

Aerosols of any kind cannot travel by sea freight. This includes hairspray, deodorant cans, WD-40, insect repellent, and spray paints. It does not matter that the cans are partially used or stored safely at home. The pressurised contents create a fire risk in an enclosed container over a long voyage.

The same applies to gas canisters, lighter fluid, paint thinners, varnishes, and any solvent-based product. Cleaning chemicals, bleach, and pool chemicals fall into the same category. So do fireworks, which are occasionally found in households in the UAE.

Garden equipment with residual fuel in tanks must be emptied and thoroughly cleaned before it can be included. Lawnmowers, generators, and pressure washers all fall into this category. If in doubt, leave them behind.

Food, Plants, and Organic Materials

Almost every country Acorn Movers ships to has strict biosecurity rules, and food is consistently the category that triggers inspections and delays.

Perishable food should never go into a container. This includes fresh produce, dairy, meat, and anything that will deteriorate over a transit of four to eight weeks. Beyond the obvious, many countries also restrict or prohibit packaged foods, particularly anything containing seeds, nuts, or plant matter, even if sealed.

Potted plants and soil are prohibited for import into most destinations. Australia and New Zealand in particular have some of the strictest biosecurity regimes in the world, and any soil residue on garden tools, plant pots, or outdoor furniture can trigger a mandatory cleaning process at considerable cost to the owner.

Items made from natural materials such as rattan, untreated wood, or dried flowers can also raise flags at customs, depending on the destination. If you are moving to Australia, the UK, Canada, or any EU country, speak to our team about specific biosecurity requirements before packing outdoor or natural-material items.

UAE-Spec Appliances for Certain Destinations

The UAE operates on 220-240V at 50Hz, which is compatible with the UK, Europe, and Australia. If you are moving to one of those destinations, your appliances will generally work without modification, though plug adapters will be needed for Europe and Australia.

Canada and the United States are a different matter entirely. Both operate on 110-120V at 60Hz. Appliances bought in the UAE will not work safely on North American electrical systems without a voltage converter, and large white goods such as washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers are not practically convertible. It is rarely worth shipping them. Buying locally on arrival is usually the more sensible decision, and it avoids the risk of damage during transit.

Air conditioning units installed in UAE properties are built for the local climate and cannot simply be uninstalled and reinstalled elsewhere. They are fixed infrastructure, not personal goods, and should not form part of any international shipment.

Items That Are Better Carried Personally

Some things are too important or too valuable to travel unaccompanied in a container. Passports, visas, and all immigration documents should never go into a shipment. You will need them on arrival, and losing them in transit creates problems that no insurance payout can quickly resolve.

Jewellery, watches, and high-value keepsakes are another category worth thinking carefully about. Most removal companies, including Acorn Movers, include standard coverage in their insurance, but irreplaceable items are best carried with you personally. The same logic applies to family photographs, personal documents, and anything that cannot be replaced if lost or damaged.

Prescription medication should travel with you in your hand luggage. Be aware that some medications that are available legally in the UAE may require documentation to import into your destination country, and a small number are restricted outright. Check destination-specific rules before you travel.

Items Requiring Permits or Special Handling

Firearms and ammunition are prohibited in standard household shipments and require licensing, permits, and specialist handling regardless of destination. If you legally own a firearm in the UAE, this is a conversation to have with our team well in advance, not on packing day.

Certain items made from protected species require documentation under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). This includes some items made from ivory, tortoiseshell, coral, or exotic animal skins, even if they were purchased legally as decorative objects. These should be declared and discussed with your moving coordinator before packing.

Valuable art and antiques may require export permits from the UAE or import permits at the destination, depending on the value and origin. If you have pieces worth declaring separately, it is worth flagging these early so that the paperwork is in order before the container is loaded.

What to Do With Everything You Are Leaving Behind

Most families find that a Dubai-to-international move is a natural point to reassess what they actually need. Furniture bought for a furnished villa, white goods included in a tenancy, and items accumulated over years in the UAE do not all need to travel.

Selling, donating, or disposing of items before packing day reduces your container volume, which directly affects cost, and it means your shipment arrives at its destination without things you will never use again. Our team can advise during your home survey on what is worth shipping and what is genuinely not.

If you have belongings you want to keep but are not ready to ship, Acorn Movers offers storage solutions in Dubai while you settle into your new home and decide what you want to bring across later.

Pack Smart Before Packing Day

A well-planned shipment clears customs without surprises. A poorly planned one can be held, inspected, partially confiscated, or delayed while your family waits for their belongings on the other side of the world.

The guidance in this post covers the most common categories, but every destination has its own specific rules. Our team reviews your inventory before packing and will flag anything that needs attention before the container is sealed.
