By the time most families in Dubai decide to move, it is already June. School has finished, the tenancy is running down, and the packing has to happen now, in the full weight of summer. Daytime highs are pushing 41°C, and inside a stopped truck or an unventilated room, it goes further. What happens to your belongings during that window, between the moment they are packed and the moment they reach temperature-controlled storage or the port at Jebel Ali, matters more than most people anticipate.

This is not a reason to delay. It is a reason to pack and manage the process properly.

What the Heat Actually Does

The concern is not just the air temperature outside. It is what happens inside sealed spaces: the back of a moving truck sitting in direct sun, a storeroom with poor ventilation, a lift lobby while boxes wait to be loaded. These spaces can reach well above 50°C within a short time on a summer afternoon in Dubai.

At those temperatures, certain materials do not simply get warm. They degrade.

LCD and OLED screens, televisions, monitors, laptops, have a storage tolerance that tops out around 60°C for dry conditions. That sounds like plenty of headroom, but a metal-sided truck in direct July sun can exceed that ceiling faster than most people expect. The liquid crystals inside a display begin to misalign under sustained heat, which produces dark spots, colour distortion, or in worse cases, permanent damage that only becomes visible when the device is powered on weeks later at your destination.

Batteries behave differently. Heat accelerates the chemical reactions inside lithium cells, which degrades capacity and in extreme cases causes swelling. A phone or laptop battery that was functioning normally in Dubai can arrive at your new home with noticeably reduced life if it spent hours in an uncontrolled environment during the move.

The Midday Ban and What It Means for Your Schedule

UAE law prohibits outdoor work under direct sunlight between 12:30pm and 3:00pm from 15 June to 15 September. The MoHRE midday ban is enforced annually, with fines of up to AED 50,000 for employers found in violation. It applies to loading, unloading, and any work carried out in open-air areas, which includes the stretch of pavement between your front door and the truck.

Reputable moving companies in Dubai plan around this, not through it. In practice, summer moves operate in two windows: an early morning start between 6:00am and 8:00am, and a late-afternoon shift after 3:00pm when the ban lifts. For larger villas or full-container loads, two-day moves are common during this period. It is not an inefficiency. It is the correct way to manage a summer relocation safely.

If a company tells you they will work straight through the midday hours in July, that is worth questioning on both legal and practical grounds.

What Needs Extra Protection

Not every item in your home requires the same level of care. The following categories are where summer heat causes the most damage during a Dubai move:

• Electronics: Televisions, desktop monitors, laptops, and tablets should be packed in their original boxes where possible. Where original packaging is unavailable, double-box with foam padding and keep out of direct sun during loading.
• Wooden furniture: Varnished and lacquered surfaces can blister, lift, and crack under high heat. Bubble wrap and moving blankets slow the rate of temperature transfer significantly.
• Artworks and prints: Canvases warp. Paper-based prints and framed photographs are vulnerable to adhesive failure and surface damage when temperatures spike.
• Musical instruments: Guitars, violins, and similarly constructed instruments can lose glue bonds in heat. Cases alone are not enough without proper wrapping.
• Candles and wax items: These are straightforward casualties. Any decorative candles or wax sculptures will not survive a Dubai summer truck unprotected.
• Wine and spirits: If you are shipping alcohol to a destination where it is permitted, heat is the enemy. Most spirits survive, but wine is genuinely at risk above 30°C for any sustained period.

Cosmetics and skincare deserve a mention. Many Dubai residents have significant collections of products that degrade rapidly under heat: serums, creams with active ingredients, and anything oil-based. These should travel as personal carry-on luggage or be packed at the last possible moment before shipment.

The Storage Question

Some international moves do not go directly from Dubai to the destination. There is a gap: the accommodation is not ready, the visa is pending, the school term has not started. Items go into storage in Dubai, or at the receiving end, while the family settles into temporary housing.

Climate-controlled storage matters enormously in this context. A standard facility without temperature regulation in Dubai’s summer can sustain interior temperatures well above 40°C for months. Electronics, furniture, and anything with adhesive joints will degrade over a three-month storage period in those conditions.

This is why goods are transported to the port in the early morning, and why proper packing, not just wrapping for transit damage, is the correct protection layer.

For air freight, goods move through the cargo handling facility faster and spend less time in thermal exposure. If you have a small volume of high-value or heat-sensitive items, air freight offers a genuine advantage in summer beyond the obvious speed benefit.

Getting the Timing Right

The practical implication of all of this is not that summer moves are dangerous. It is that they need more planning, started earlier.

The sensible approach is to book packing and loading for early morning, keep heat-sensitive items out of boxes until the last possible day, confirm that any storage involved is climate-controlled, and use a company that understands the midday ban and plans around it as a matter of routine.
