New York is not a tentative decision. People who move there from Dubai have usually thought about it for a while: a job offer, a green card finally coming through, a family returning after years abroad, or simply the pull of a city that operates on a scale of its own. Whatever the reason, the move is significant, and the logistics match that scale.
This post covers the full picture: how your goods travel from Jebel Ali to the Port of New York and New Jersey, what US Customs requires, how to prepare your documentation, and where to settle once you arrive.
Who Relocates from Dubai to New York

The profile is broad. US citizens and green card holders returning after years in the UAE make up a large share of this route, but so do professionals relocating for finance, media, and technology roles, families following a spouse’s employer transfer, and expats who have simply decided New York is where they want to be next. Abu Dhabi residents relocate on this route too, with identical customs and freight requirements.
The UAE is home to a substantial American community. According to the US Census Bureau, the United States continues to attract millions of international arrivals annually, and the return flow from the Gulf is a consistent part of that pattern. Acorn Movers coordinates collections from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi as standard.
Where to Live in New York
The five boroughs offer genuinely different lives, and the choice matters more than most people expect when they’re planning from Dubai.
Manhattan suits professionals who want the city immediately outside their door: proximity to finance and media districts, no commute to speak of, and the full intensity of New York at all hours. The Upper East and Upper West Sides attract families with school-age children, while downtown neighbourhoods like the West Village and Tribeca appeal to professionals without children who want walkability and character over space.
Brooklyn has become the default choice for families priced out of Manhattan or simply seeking more room. Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights offer tree-lined streets, good public schools, and easy subway access. Williamsburg is the natural landing spot for younger professionals who want the energy of the city without the Manhattan price tag.
For those relocating with children and a preference for suburban space without leaving the metro area, New Jersey offers a different calculation: Hoboken and Jersey City provide direct PATH train access to Manhattan and considerably more floor space per dollar. Both are worth considering seriously before committing to a borough.
Freight from Dubai to New York: How It Works

Sea freight is the only practical option for full household relocations on this route. Air freight exists for smaller consignments and time-sensitive items, but shipping furniture, appliances, and full household contents by air is not cost-effective at this distance.
Vessels depart from Jebel Ali and travel via the Suez Canal to the Port of New York and New Jersey, the busiest container port on the US East Coast. Port-to-port transit on this route runs approximately 25 to 30 days. Door-to-door timing, once customs clearance, drayage from the port, and delivery to your New York address are included, typically runs seven to nine weeks in total. That is the planning window to build your timeline around.
For a two-to-three bedroom apartment, a shared container (LCL) usually works well on volume and cost. Larger family homes require a dedicated twenty-foot or forty-foot container. Acorn Movers conducts a pre-move survey before making a container recommendation, so the quote reflects what you’re actually shipping. Our moving to New York page has more detail on the process specific to this route.
US Customs: The Two Documents You Need
Importing household goods into the United States involves two distinct compliance requirements, and both need to be in order before your container leaves Jebel Ali.
The first is CBP Form 3299, formally titled the Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles. This is the document through which you claim duty-free status for your personal effects. According to US Customs and Border Protection, household goods that have been owned and used abroad for at least one year may enter the United States free of duty and tax, provided they are for personal use and not for sale. Items purchased in Dubai in the weeks before the move, or goods owned for less than twelve months, are unlikely to qualify and may attract import duty. The inventory attached to your Form 3299 needs to be specific: vague descriptions like “miscellaneous kitchen items” invite CBP inspection, which can result in delays and additional storage fees at the port.
The second is the ISF filing, also known as the 10+2 Rule. Under CBP requirements, an Importer Security Filing must be submitted electronically at least 24 hours before the container is loaded onto the vessel at Jebel Ali. Late or inaccurate filing can result in fines of up to USD 5,000 per violation, and in serious cases, a “do not load” order before the container ever leaves Dubai. Acorn Movers works with a licensed US customs broker who handles both the ISF filing and the Form 3299 preparation as part of the move coordination.
What Cannot Be Shipped to the United States
US import rules are specific and strictly enforced. The following items commonly cause problems on this route:
- Meat, dairy products, and most fresh food from non-US sources are prohibited
- Soil and seeds are prohibited by the USDA regardless of how they are packed
- Items derived from endangered species, including ivory, certain reptile skins, and CITES-listed materials, cannot be imported
- Firearms and ammunition require a separate import permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and cannot travel with household goods
- Kinder Surprise eggs are explicitly banned in the United States and will be confiscated
- Medication should be in its original packaging and limited to personal use quantities; prescription drugs require a copy of the prescription
- Brand-new items purchased immediately before the move may not qualify for duty-free entry and should be declared separately
A clean, itemised, and accurate packing list is the single most effective way to avoid CBP inspection on arrival. Acorn Movers prepares the inventory as part of the packing process, with every item documented before the container is sealed.
Shipping Your Car from Dubai

Many families relocating from Dubai to New York choose not to ship a car: parking in Manhattan is expensive, and the subway and rideshare options are sufficient for most daily needs. For those moving to Brooklyn, Queens, or New Jersey suburbs, having a car is more useful.
If you do ship, the process runs separately from household goods and involves its own documentation: proof of ownership, the original title, and a compliance check on arrival. UAE-specification vehicles may require modifications to meet US safety and emissions standards before they can be registered in New York. Our vehicle shipping service covers the documentation and logistics at both ends.
Delivery in New York: What to Expect
New York delivery has its own complications. Most residential buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn require advance notice of a move-in, elevator reservation for the service lift, and Certificate of Insurance (COI) from the moving company, naming the building as an additionally insured party. This is standard and non-negotiable in most managed buildings and co-ops.
Street access for trucks is often limited to specific hours or specific loading zones, and in some buildings, moves are restricted to weekdays. Acorn Movers’ receiving agent in New York coordinates all of this in advance, so there are no delays at the building end after a seven-week transit.
Planning Your Timeline
A realistic planning window for a Dubai-to-New York move is ten to twelve weeks from first contact to delivery at your new address. That covers the pre-move survey, packing, ISF filing, container loading at Jebel Ali, sea transit, CBP clearance, and final delivery.
Families with a confirmed school start date in September need to be loading the container no later than June or early July. Professionals with a confirmed employment start date need to work backwards from that date with the same logic. If you are reading this in May and haven’t started, the survey needs to happen this week.
