The Three Options You’ll Be Quoted

Most international shipments from Dubai fall into one of three categories, and the right one depends entirely on volume, not on how big your home feels.

A 20ft container holds roughly 33 cubic metres of space, enough for a one to two-bedroom apartment’s worth of furniture and boxes. A studio in Dubai Marina or a two-bedroom in JVC usually fits comfortably here, often with room to spare.

A 40ft container roughly doubles that, at around 67 cubic metres. This is the standard choice for a three to four-bedroom villa, the kind of household you’d find in Arabian Ranches or Mirdif, including full living room sets, dining furniture, and multiple bedrooms of belongings.

LCL, or less than container load, is the option for anyone shipping a smaller volume who doesn’t need a full container. Your goods share space with other shipments in the same box, and you pay only for the cubic metres you actually use.

How to Actually Estimate Your Volume

The mistake most people make is estimating by room count instead of by what’s actually going into boxes. A four-bedroom villa where two bedrooms are used as a home office and a gym ships very differently to a four-bedroom villa with four fully furnished rooms.

Why Overbooking Costs More Than It Should

Paying for a 40ft container you only fill halfway isn’t just wasted space, it’s wasted money on a fixed cost that doesn’t scale down. Freight pricing is largely tied to container size rather than actual volume shipped, so a half-empty 40ft costs close to what a full one does.

The opposite mistake, booking a 20ft for a shipment that needs a 40ft, tends to surface at the worst possible moment: loading day, with the crew already at your Jebel Ali departure point and half your furniture still on the driveway. At that point you’re either leaving items behind or paying for an emergency second container, arranged in a hurry and at a premium.

Some households genuinely sit in the grey area between a 20ft and a 40ft. In that case, LCL sometimes works out cheaper than stepping up to the larger container, particularly if your volume only slightly exceeds 33 cubic metres.

The trade-off is transit flexibility. A dedicated container moves on your schedule. LCL shipments consolidate with other cargo, which can mean a slightly longer wait before departure while the container fills. For most Dubai moves this adds a few days, not weeks, but it’s worth factoring into your planning timeline if your destination has a hard arrival deadline, a lease start date or a school term.

Storage Changes the Calculation Too

If your move-out date in Dubai doesn’t line up with your move-in date at the destination, short-term storage can change which container size makes sense. Rather than paying to ship everything immediately, some families split their shipment, sending essentials by air or in a smaller container while the rest sits in secure storage until the new home is ready.
